What The Bible Say About Celebrating Birthdays?

As my spouse surprised me with a birthday party second week of April 2017, I was blind-folded going inside the house, no doubt it was a special surprise to see.   As I walked through the house towards the patio, the blindfold was removed and the first thing I saw was my dearest cousin who I haven’t seen in years.  Wow, what a surprise to see my cousin, all my friends in Christ, daughter in-law, son and my beautiful grand daughter.  Special thanks to my wife for coordinating such activity and friends who helped her with her hidden agenda.  Thank you God, for blessing me with another year of life and allowing us to celebrate such; I am so grateful and thankful for your mercy and grace.

Now, I started thinking, what does the Holy scripture say about celebrating birthdays.

Several days after celebrating my birthday,  I was led by the Holy Spirit to research what God says concerning celebrating birthdays.  I came to realize that we (majority of Christians, non-Christians) don’t know what God thoughts, beliefs and guidelines on birthday celebration.  So, here I go diving into the Word of God, seeking what messages He wants me to fine and what new findings I will encounter during my research.   I truly belief that God want us to celebrate life abundantly; but now is time to find out what that means.  You can join me by referring and validating what I am expressing in this blog.

John 10:10 New International Version (NIV)

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Reading the Holy Scripture in the book of John, chapter 10 verse 10, I would never had thought that this verse was also giving us another clue about abundant life.  Here is an example where the son of God, Yeshua is saying that His coming brings renewal abundant life and my understanding that He values life.   Let’s dig deeper into the instruction manual of life as follow:

Matthew 4:4

But Jesus told him, “No! For the Scriptures tell us that bread won’t feed men’s souls: obedience to every word of God is what we need.”

2 Timothy 3:16

16 The whole Bible[a] was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right.

Now, there are some examples of birthday celebrations that went very bad in biblical times, below are some examples:

Genesis 40:16-23

16 When the chief baker saw that the first dream had such a good meaning, he told his dream to Joseph, too.

“In my dream,” he said, “there were three baskets of pastries on my head. 17 In the top basket were all kinds of bakery goods for Pharaoh, but the birds came and ate them.”

18-19 “The three baskets mean three days,” Joseph told him. “Three days from now Pharaoh will take off your head and impale your body on a pole, and the birds will come and pick off your flesh!”

20 Pharaoh’s birthday came three days later, and he held a party for all of his officials and household staff. He sent for his chief butler and chief baker, and they were brought to him from the prison. 21 Then he restored the chief butler to his former position; 22 but he sentenced the chief baker to be impaled, just as Joseph had predicted. 23 Pharaoh’s wine taster, however, promptly forgot all about Joseph, never giving him a thought.

Pharaoh, the Egyptian king, celebrated his birthday by executing his chief baker.  God provided Joseph a special gift of understanding dreams, Joseph interpreted the baker dream, which came to pass that the baker would lose his life three days after Joseph interpreted the dream.  Joseph understood that Pharaoh would use this occasion (his birthday party) to put his baker to death. As the dream had foretold, the baker was hung at the party.

Another story did not go well celebrating birthdays and in the book of Jobs.  In this book it show me that the birthday party’s were not centered on God, instead it ran for days celebrating a birthday.  This book shows that God is a gracious Father who wants His children to have birthday celebration as long as God is the center of the celebration.  We need to recognize and give our LORD the praise for granting us another day of life and obtain His blessing over the celebration.  As long as the birthday celebration are within His guidelines He will be pleased.  Note, if the birthday derail off track from God’s guidelines, then no doubt that the birthday celebration is driven by man without His blessings and not of His likings.  You can have a birthday party without alcohol or any other related drinks that is not pleasing to God.

After my research I have learned, that I first we should honor God first above all, give Him thanks and seek his blessing.  Every year that God grant us to have an opportunity to celebrate, is price less, and precious to God.  Well, I hope this experience that I encountered help open your eyes as it did to me.

Happy Birthday, may God be the center of your life and may His blessings bring honor to the Great I AM.

Remember, is not about me or you, but the Great I AM.

Gob bless always,
